Ontario Corps: A New Way to Help Our Neighbourhood
by Cindy Rutley
You may have heard the name in a recent radio spot or seen an ad on the TV. Curious? Me too. I decided to dig in and see what this volunteer network is really about.
What Is Ontario Corps?
Ontario Corps is a province‑wide volunteer hub that can be called upon during emergencies—think floods, fires, or any crisis that strains local resources. The goal? Make sure every community, even the smallest, gets the help it needs, when it needs it.
Ontario Corps is:
Open to all Ontario residents
Flexible commitment – pick when and how you want to help
Diverse opportunities – from emergency prep and food distribution to debris cleanup and wellness checks
My First Steps
I signed up to try it out. The process looks simple on the surface but covers a few important steps to keep everyone safe:
1. Online Training – Emergency Management & Preparedness (60 min)
2. Online Training – Volunteer Risk Management (60 min)
3. Background Check - Criminal record screening (usually 1–2 weeks) |
Why It Matters
Speedy response – volunteers can jump in right after a call, filling gaps while larger agencies mobilise.
Community resilience – the more familiar faces we have on the ground, the stronger our collective response.
Personal growth – training gives you a solid grasp of emergency basics, useful in everyday life too.
I’m halfway through the registration process, so I’ll be able to share the inside scoop in the next edition of The Carlingwood Chronicle.
