How to Get Your Home Rain Ready

Have you noticed Ottawa is getting heavier rain storms? Are you wondering what you can do to avoid rain-related problems on your property and in your community? Rain Ready Ottawa has some ideas, and some rebates to help you take action.

Rain Ready Ottawa is a city program that encourages and supports residents to take action on their property to reduce the harmful impacts of rainwater runoff. Rushing runoff picks up pollutants and enters storm sewers that drain straight into streams and rivers. Increased water volume can lead to flooding and the pollutants carried along can result in beach closures.

Keeping in mind that, with climate change, heavy storms could become more frequent, now might be a good time to take action to avoid future problems. As Rain Ready Ottawa suggests, you could:

• Build a rain garden that uses plants and soil to absorb rainwater and filter pollutants. This is particularly useful If you have a low-lying area or a spot where rainwater pools or a downspout drains;

• Direct your downspouts to permeable surfaces such as gardens or grass. This will slow the rush of water into the streets and storm sewers;

• Build a soak-away pit to capture water from roofs and paved areas;

• Reduce paved areas and use permeable resurfacing options;

• Clean and maintain eavestroughs, downspouts, and catch basins.

And what about those rebates, you ask. You may qualify for up to $5000 in rebates:

·      Downspout redirection - up to $1000

·      Rain gardens – up to $2500

·      Soak-away pits – up to $2500

·      Permeable pavement – up to $5000.

·      Landscape design – up to $500

Think you won’t be eligible? I threw my address (near Carlingwood Shopping Centre) into this tool and was surprised to find I am in a “priority stormwater retrofit area”.  Gosh, maybe I should be taking this advice!
