Drivers Speeding More Since Cameras Removed: City Report

 A report from the City of Ottawa confirms what many predicted: driving around school zones got more reckless.

Just a week after Doug Ford’s ban on automated speed enforcement cameras in November last year, oonly 62% of drivers were complying with speed limits in school zones. Three weeks later only 51% of drivers were complying. And by February this year, only 41% of drivers followed the posted speed limit. 

Just before cameras were shut down, 87% of drivers followed posted speed limits.

The city has been collecting and analyzing speed data at eight locations to evaluate the impact of the camera removals.  According to the city report, removing speed cameras has significantly affected speed limit compliance and increased high-end speeding, suggesting a shift in driver behaviour.
